Covid Protocols

COVID-19 Protocols are in Place

Residents of aged care facilities are at risk for acquiring COVID-19 and for severe outcomes. Also, COVID-19 appears to present an increased risk to people with neurocognitive deficits or intellectual and physical disabilities.

Difficulties with adhering to frequent handwashing and physical distancing as well as poor insight and judgement regarding the risk of infection put them at increased risk of disease transmission. Being older and having multiple comorbidities is a leading indicator of poor outcomes from infection with COVID-19. In addition, the physical environment in aged care facilities often requires the performance of activities in communal spaces in close proximity that further complicates the management of outbreaks.

High risk for introduction of COVID-19 transmission in aged care homes includes (i) residents hospitalised and then discharged back to the care home; and (ii) care home employees or visitors who may have acquired COVID-19 in the community.

Covid Protocols

We as a home have put a COVID 19 WORKPLACE  PLAN in place and together with  Select Care Services have operated as an essential service with skeleton staff to ensure that our residents receive the necessary care to prevent the spread of COVID-19. All our staff are required to wear masks at all times during work and to follow good hygiene etiquette like sanitizing, coughing into a tissue, regular washing of hands, social distancing etc.Together with this we have implemented a Daily Protocol which is followed and encompasses most importantly the screening of all staff prior to work for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 to mitigate the chances of them bringing the virus into the home. Our residents are also screened daily by the Nursing staff. If someone is seen as being a PUI “person under investigation” the COVID-19 protocols are implemented and these include wearing of masks and/or face covers, sanitizing, regular washing of hands, social distancing etc. and further necessary measures are taken in dealing with the situation accordingly. We have also designated an area for our residents who are in isolation to be housed comfortably and nursed according to protocol. Our protocols and visitation policy change as and when the national guidelines are amended and according to the homes ongoing risk assessment at the time. It is our duty of care that we take all necessary precautions within our means to keep our residents as safe as possible.
